CARS AND MAN'S-BEST-FRIEND:
A Special Thanks You
Dear Haven,
Hi Guys! Remember me, probably not since you have helped so many dogs find homes since I left! In 2001 I was 3 months old and my name was Jose. My mom was living in an abandoned trailer. I was tiny and weighed three pounds at 3 months of age. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin now.
I am very tall and thin and love to run circles in my yard. We have a house with a fenced-in yard, 5 dog beds for 3 of us, and I have tons of toys. My mom says it is like having a 2 year old because I play with different toys everyday and leave them around the house.
I have been with my mom for almost 7 years now. She buys me treats all the time and spends a small fortune on dog food every week. My mom likes to buy us the best food since my sister has medical issues. My mom still talks about The Haven and how she is thankful for what you guys do. Otherwise we wouldn’t have found each other. FURRY TAILES CAN COME TRUE
1ST ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION
APRIL 19, 2008
The
HAVEN
Friends for life
Thanks for Your Support
Thank you for all the wonderful people last year who opened their hearts and homes to our animals in need. We are particularly grateful for those who take older animals and long term residents such as Mick and Ruby who were adopted December 2007. Their new parents say they are very happy in Winston-Salem, with a huge yard, lots of green grass, and each other. They are two very happy girls, who will live long and healthy lives.
While we are still finalizing numbers for 2007, we can share a few important numbers – Total operating and Remodeling cost was $525,000 for 2007. We helped over 1800 cats and dogs find wonderful homes as well as cared for an average of 1200 animals per day while they awaited adoption. We are happy to say we saved over 3000 animals from euthanasia by transferring them to The haven. This year, we have already spent $70,000 on operating and remodeling costs. Your continued support makes the important work we do possible.
1ST ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION
Join us! To help with the continual need for funds The Haven will host its First Annual Fund Raiser to take place at the armory in Hoke County. Enjoy Italian cuisine catered by Caterino’s Bakery in Southern Pines. There will be music and a silent auction to aid in the funding process. The event is to be held on April 19th. Tickets will soon become available on line for $40 per person and $35 per person with a military ID. Locations to purchase tickets in town will be announced soon.
PUPPIES RAISING BARS
Puppies Raising Bars partners inmates from McCain Prison with dogs from The Haven. The dogs spend 3 months at the prison and graduate with a “Basic Training,” certificate, increasing their chances of finding a permanent home. Joe Bailer is the Program Manager and Instructor from Sandhill’s Community College and runs the 5 day a week course that makes this program possible. He has an extensive background in handling and training dogs both in the law and military fields. Inmates apply to be part of the program where they learn to care for the dogs and teach basic commands like sit, stay, and walk on a loose leash. The program helps participants gain valuable skills and helps the dogs become trained and more adoptable. The first graduating class of Puppies Raising Bars will be March 2008. When asked about the value of this new program, Kennel Master Bob Lewis summed it up well, “It isn’t just about training dogs, you help save the life of the dog, the dog touches the inmate’s life, which then touches their families and friends life, and it goes from there. One dog can positively affect the life of hundreds.” Watch for program updates on www.thhaven-nc.com.
HIKING HOUND BUDDIES
Hiking Hound Buddies started as a few volunteers who would walk and exercise dogs to increase their chance for adoption. Thanks to a great response from the community it continues to grow. Group walks are held monthly, with the goal of volunteers coming back regularly to walk and socialize the dogs. A group of dogs are selected to focus on and get them ready for adoption. To become a Hiking Hound Buddy and learn more about the program please visit www.thehaven-nc.com. We are especially in need of volunteers with Dog Training experience.

THE HAVEN NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Greetings,
Thank you for being a supporter of The Haven mission to save the lives of abandoned pets. This has been a very busy time for us... We have taken in an unusually high number of rescues. Last week, three puppies were abandoned at PetSmart, at least two were left in the dumpster and another was tied up behind the store. We received tow of these puppies, while the third was apparently given away in error. The bad news is that the puppies are sick. The good news is that they are receiving the best possible care through The Haven and we hope both will make a full recovery. We continue to pull animals on a weekly basis from Moore County and Robeson County Animal Control. We also received two dogs left on the side of a street, as well s two cats and five adult dogs in the last few days from military families unable to continue to care for their pets.
We are delighted to report that the cats have already been adopted and will remain together in a new home. The dogs will be available as soon as they are ready to make new friends. We are keeping our staff veterinarians very busy this week, spaying and neutering over 40 to 50 animals to prepare them for adoption. The veterinarians have requested that we immediately purchase a surgical table and a wet table. The total costs of these items are $3,000. We are calling on you, our supporters, to help with these purchases.
Our remodeling is progressing and we will complete the upgrade of our outdoor catteries this week. We are happy to report that this upgrade covers the wood that has been a concern with inspection compliance. The total bill for this project is approximately #17,000 with $7,000 still owed. Again, so that we can continue to provide rescue services to abandoned cat, we need to ask for donations to help us cover these costs. Our new shelter building now has the plumbing and wiring installed, the next phase is to install heating and air conditioning. The bill for this will be $6,000. Unfortunately, remodeling will come to a complete halt until we receive adequate donations to proceed. Feeding and care of the animals has to come first.
Our remodeling is required to be completed to insure that our doors stay open and for us to continue to serve our communities’ homeless pets. Donations are desperately needed. Remember that all donations are tax deductible.
The Haven sends its many thanks to all of you for helping to save animals. On behalf of the animals, thank you.
Sincerely,
Linden Spear, Executive Director
